James Rocillo
(Brass Instructor)
James Rocillo has been a professional musician & educator for the past 21 years. He has studied with trumpet greats, Bobby Shew, Tony Lujan, Ron Stout, Sal Cracchiolo, Rob Roy McGregor, Bob Slack and Charlie Davis. As a musician he works as a freelance artist in the fields of both classical and jazz. He has performed throughout California, as well as Canada, Hawaii, and Japan. James studied music at Long Beach City College, Citrus College and Cal State University Northridge. In 2008 James earned his Bachelors degree in Business Marketing from the University of Phoenix.
Presently he is the Assistant Director of Bands at Ayala High School in Chino Hills, CA a position he has held since the fall of 2000. Since the fall of 2000 James also serves on the Music Staff at Nogales High School in La Puente, CA. Here James works with the Marching Band, Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble. In 2007 James was hired on the staff at Riverside Community College (RCC). James is in charge of the brass program for the marching band as well as being the Director of The Lab Jazz Ensemble. As an adjudicator James has judged throughout California as well as in Missouri Seattle, and Nebraska. In the Drum Corps world he has worked with Yamato Drum & Bugle Corps (Osaka, Japan) and the Concord Blue Devils B corps. He has been a caption head for the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps (2001-2003) and Esperanza Drum and Bugle Corps (2004). From 2005-2007 he was on the brass staff of the six time DCI Champions Santa Clara Vanguard. In 2008 James joined the brass staff of the 12 time DCI Champions Concord Blue Devils.
James resides in Chino Hills Ca, where he lives with his beautiful wife Stacey and their dog Henry.
James Plunkett

James Plunkett was a marching member and section leader of the RCC Marching Tigers in the late 90’s and is happy to return to the organization as a member of the visual team. James received his Bachelors degree in Kinesiology from Cal State University, Fullerton and is blessed to have the opportunity to share his knowledge and experience with students across the globe. Since beginning his instructing career in 1998 at Nogales H.S., James has worked with over 17 high schools in the Southern California area as a designer and/or instructor for field season and both indoor drums and guard. Some of his accomplishments include designing and instructing DCI champions, WGI Medalist, SCPA Medalist, BOA Grand National Finalist, BOA Regional Champions, WBA Champions, SCSBOA Champions, Fiesta Bowl Medalist, and one outstanding Macy’s Parade band.

James has also roughed the road teaching drum corp since his age out year in 2001 with the Concord Blue Devils, as a three year member holding positions of section leader and horn sergeant and receiving the Most Valuable Brass member award in 2001. He was the Visual Caption Head with the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corp from Casper, Wyoming in 2002 and 2003, receiving an “Educator of the Year” award in 2002. In 2004, James worked with both the Troopers and Esperanza as a visual instructor/ music instructor. 2005 and 2006 he was the Visual Co-Caption Head at the Yamato Drum and Bugle Corp. In 2007 and 2008 James was honored to be a part of the amazing visual team with the Concord Blue Devils. Also in 2007, he worked as a visual performance consultant for the Arizona Academy Drum and Bugle Corp.
James resides in Upland, California with his beautiful wife Lucy and son Kristopher.
Juan Gallegos, Jr
(Woodwind Instructor)
Juan Gallegos is an active clarinetist and educator in Southern California. He holds a Master of Music degree from The University of Texas, Austin and a Bachelor of Music degree from California State University, Fullerton in Clarinet Performance. Juan has been involved with professional symphonies such as the Santa Barbara Symphony, Mladi Chamber Orchestra, Round Rock Symphony, Temple Symphony, and Texas Chamber Orchestra to name a few. He made his solo debut in 2001 at the Orange County Performing Art Center with the Mt. San Antonio College Wind Ensemble. Since then, he has performed concerti and recitals regularly. As an educator and conductor, he has taught at CSU Fullerton, UT Austin, Los Altos H.S., Azusa H.S., Mayfair H.S., Damien H.S., and Nogales H.S., which he graduated from in 2000.
Juan has studied clarinet with local and international artists such as Donald Foster, Hakan Rosengren, Mark Nuccio, Richard Stoltzman, Ricardo Morales and Nathan Williams. As a conductor, he has studied and was mentored by Mitch Fennell, Larry Curtis, Robert Carnochan, Richard Floyd, Carl St. Clair, Mark Mandarano, and Jerry Junkin. He has been part of music tours that have taken him to S. Korea, England, Spain, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, and the U.S. including Hawaii.
Danny Fernandez
(Director)
Daniel P. Fernandez is an active freelance saxophonist and flautist in
Southern California. He currently holds a bachelors degree in Music
Education from the University of Texas at El Paso(UTEP). During his
time at UTEP, and under the tutelage of Dr. Don Wilkinson(Professor of
Woodwinds), Danny was able to develop and perform in a vast array of
musical genres and styles. He was principal saxophonist of the UTEP
Wind Ensemble conducted by Dr. Ron Hufstader, as well as Lead Alto in
the UTEP Lab Band under the directions of Professor Sam Trimble(Former
Lead Trumpet of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.) In 2002, Danny traveled
with the UTEP Lab Band on a tour of six cities in England for the Wigan
Jazz Festival.
In 2004, Danny was given the honor of performing with the UTEP Jazz
Combo in Washington, D.C. for a celebrity roast of legendary CBS
anchorman Sam Donaldson.
In 2001 and 2004, Danny was announced as the winner of the University
of Texas at El Paso Concerto and Aria Competition, performing both
times with the UTEP Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Professor
Lawrence Gibson.
Danny has also performed in over 30 musicals, on-stage and off, with
the UTEP Dinner Theatre, capping off his stead with a performance with
legendary lyricist Sir Tim Rice. He also was the founder/musical
leader/sound engineer/ and promoter of Fuego Latino, a Cuban Salsa
group that toured through Texas, Mexico, New Mexico, Arizona, and
California. Opening up for the likes of Tito Puente Jr. in
Albuquerque, NM., and Ocho y Mas from NYC.
Robert Bowen
(Co-Caption Head of Percussion)
Robert started playing percussion when he was a sophomore at Trabuco Hills HS just by luck. He happened to be hanging out one day after school when his friend let him know they were having drumline tryouts and needed more people. As we can see he made it and had the pleasure of being instructed by Mike Jackson. While in high school Robert went and marched West Coast Sound Drum and Bugle Corps on snare. After high school Robert marched Black Knights Drum Corps 2002 and 2003 on snare where they won a WGI Silver Medal. After aging out Robert became the snare tech at Impulse and mystical D&B corps.
Over the 9 years Robert has been teaching percussion his groups have won 1 WGI medal, 1 RMPA medal, 5 SCPA medals and numerous 1st place awards during marching season and 2nd semester.
Robert is endorsed by Promark sticks and mallets and would like to thank them for the great things they do for his groups. Robert would also like to say thanks to Mike Jackson for all of the great advice that he has given him. Last, but not least, Robert would like to thank his wife Lorena for understanding the time commitment that this activity takes.
Kevin Shah
(Co-Caption Head of Percussion)
Kevin Shah is an active freelance percussionist and educator in southern California specializing in orchestral percussion, marimba, marching percussion and composition. As graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, Kevin has performed in many venues around the world from New York’s Carnegie Hall to Sydney’s Opera House under world-class conductors such as James Levine and James Conlon.
Also experienced in marching percussion, Kevin has performed with several Division 1 Drum Corps and World Class Indoor Ensembles - in both the battery and the front ensemble. Currently, he teaches and composes music for several high school marching percussion ensembles as well as composing full wind arrangements for marching bands.
